Nothing changes a room faster than art at genuine scale. An extra large abstract work does what no furniture, paint or styling can: it commits the room to a point of view. And yet oversized art is the purchase people hesitate over longest, because the stakes feel high and the walls feel unforgiving. The hesitation is misplaced, large abstraction is actually the hardest purchase to get wrong, provided the sizing arithmetic is respected.

Why Scale Is the Cheapest Luxury
Per square centimetre, large art is the best value in decorating: one confident two-metre work costs less than most sofas and outperforms every smaller styling decision in the room combined. Scale reads as conviction. A room with one oversized abstract feels designed; the same room with five small works feels furnished. Hotels and design publications lean on exactly this effect, and it transfers to homes intact.
Large abstraction has a second advantage over large figurative work: it scales without shouting. A two-metre photograph is a two-metre subject demanding attention; a two-metre tonal abstract is atmosphere, the room's temperature rather than its topic. This is why the oversized works that age best are gestural, landscape-derived and tonal rather than graphic.

The Sizing Arithmetic, Wall by Wall
- Above a sofa: 60 to 75 percent of the sofa's width. A 2.4m modular wants 1.5 to 1.8m of art, one work or a pair totalling it.
- The open wall: 60 to 75 percent of wall width, centre at 145cm (57in). On walls beyond four metres, position the work over the furniture zone rather than centring on the architecture.
- Double-height voids: the one place art can exceed these ratios; keep the centre related to ground-level sightlines, not mezzanine height.
- Standard 2.4m ceilings: cap heights around 1.2m framed; oversized here means wide, not tall. Horizontal and panoramic formats carry the scale without crowding the cornice.
- Stairwells: a large vertical hung to the stair's diagonal midpoint is the classic solution to the tallest wall in the house.
Tape the outline on the wall and live with it for a day before ordering. In our experience the taped rectangle convinces people to go larger at least as often as smaller.

Open-Plan Homes: Zoning With Art
Australian open plans have one recurring problem: a living-dining-kitchen run with a single unbroken wall and no architectural cue where one zone ends. Oversized abstraction is the fix designers use. One large work above the sofa zone declares the living area; a second, smaller work near the dining zone, sharing a palette thread with the first, closes the composition. The two-work conversation zones the plan without a single partition. Works conceived as a series, like Bronte Rocks I and Bronte Rocks II, do this with no matching effort.

Format at Scale: Canvas, Print, or Panoramic
- Framed canvas is the workhorse beyond a metre: no glass (no reflections, less weight), painterly presence, and it travels safely rolled or stretched. The abstract canvas collection carries most of our large-format range.

What Changes in the Making at Scale
Every production shortcut becomes visible at two metres. Print resolution has to hold at close range, because people walk up to large art; our large-format works are printed with archival pigment inks at full native resolution, never upscaled to fit. Stretching must be drum-tight over proper bars or canvas ripples within a season. Frames carry real load, ours are solid timber, oak, white or black finish, cut and joined on Italian machinery by our own artisans, with corner bracing sized to the span. Designer Tips
- Two fixings minimum on anything over 80cm wide, and wall-appropriate anchors always; the hanging guide covers plasterboard, brick and stud walls.
- Light large art evenly: one downlight clipping the top of a two-metre work is worse than no light; a pair of wall washers or a picture light sized to the frame does it justice.
- Tonal and landscape-derived abstraction tolerates the largest sizes; save maximum contrast for maximum-ceiling rooms.
- Under art this size, style small: a low console, a single ceramic. Competing height kills the effect.

Frequently Asked Questions
What counts as extra large wall art?
In practice, anything beyond about 1.2m on its longest side, the point where a work stops decorating a wall and starts defining the room. Our extra large collection runs well past two metres for open-plan and double-height spaces.
Can a large artwork be too big for a room?
Rarely, and the ratios protect you: stay near 75 percent of the wall or furniture width and the room absorbs surprising scale. What actually fails is height in standard-ceiling rooms, a tall work crowding the cornice reads oversized even when the width is right. Go wide, not tall, under 2.4m ceilings.
Is large abstract art expensive?
Less than the fear suggests, and the per-impact value is decorating's best. Because we print, stretch and frame in-house at our own facilities, large-format work prices scale with material, not with boutique markup, and there are no surprise import fees: duties are paid on every order, everywhere we ship.
How do I hang very large art safely?
Two rated anchors minimum, spaced at least a third of the work's width apart, into studs or masonry anchors, never plasterboard alone for works over 10kg. Use a level, mark both points, and recruit a second pair of hands; large art is awkward long before it is heavy.
What style of abstract art works best oversized?
Tonal fields, landscape-derived abstraction and organic gestural work, styles that behave as atmosphere at scale. Dense, high-contrast graphic compositions fatigue at large sizes in ordinary rooms. If the shortlist is between drama and depth, at two metres, depth wins.
Should a large artwork match my wall colour?
It should keep one tone in conversation with the wall and bring at least one the wall does not own. Tone-on-tone at scale is genuinely luxurious, a bone-and-oat two-metre work on warm white, provided the artwork carries strong texture to hold the eye.
