Accessibility Statement
Last reviewed: 30 March 2026
Our Commitment
Olive et Oriel is committed to ensuring that oliveetoriel.com is accessible to all people, including those with disabilities. We are actively working toward conformance with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA — the standard referenced by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and equivalent Australian and international legislation.
We believe accessibility is not a compliance exercise — it is a reflection of our values. Every customer deserves a full and equal experience on our website.
Technical Standard
Our target standard is WCAG 2.1 Level AA. We test using Google Lighthouse, manual keyboard navigation testing, and visual review. We acknowledge our testing has not yet included dedicated screen reader device testing (see Outstanding Work below).
What We Have Completed
The following improvements were implemented on 30 March 2026:
Keyboard Navigation
- Focus indicators: All interactive elements display a visible olive gold focus ring (#858141) when navigated by keyboard. This colour passes WCAG 2.1 AA contrast on all page backgrounds. Focus indicators cover all first and third-party elements including wishlist, reviews, and loyalty widgets.
- Skip to main content: A skip link is present on all pages.
- Cart, navigation, and filter drawers: All three drawers implement focus containment (Tab key stays within the drawer while open), Escape key to close, ARIA dialog and aria-modal roles, and accessible labels. Screen readers are correctly notified when drawers open and close. This addresses WCAG 2.1 Success Criteria 2.1.1 and 2.1.2.
- Add to Cart button: Explicit aria-label applied in both standard and quick-view contexts.
- Form controls: All select elements, variant pickers, and radio/checkbox inputs have accessible labels. Form error states include aria-describedby, aria-invalid, and role=alert attributes.
- Touch targets: All interactive elements meet the 44×44px minimum, with at least 8px spacing between adjacent targets.
Colour Contrast
- Text contrast across standard page backgrounds meets WCAG 2.1 AA minimums (4.5:1 for body text, 3:1 for large text).
- Five colour scheme backgrounds that previously failed contrast requirements have been corrected.
- Product card text (vendor and type labels) reviewed and corrected across all colour schemes.
- Note on automated reporting: Our accessibility tool (Google Lighthouse) flags contrast warnings on elements that use CSS custom properties (CSS variables). It cannot resolve variable values at audit time and conservatively reports these as potential failures. We have manually verified the affected elements render with black text (#000000) on white backgrounds — a 21:1 contrast ratio, well above the 4.5:1 minimum. We continue to monitor this.
Interactive Elements & ARIA
- All buttons and links have accessible names via visible text or aria-label.
- No nested interactive elements.
- Push notification permission request now defers until after user interaction (previously triggered on page load, which did not meet WCAG 2.2 Success Criterion 3.2.1).
Page Structure
- All pages have descriptive title tags and meta descriptions.
- Heading hierarchy is maintained (H1 → H2 → H3) without skipped levels.
- Page language is declared (English).
Performance
Site performance improvements were made that directly benefit users on slow connections or using assistive devices: homepage Largest Contentful Paint reduced from 23.5s to 3.5s; collection page main-thread blocking time reduced by 74%. Non-critical scripts (chat widget, analytics, loyalty tools) are now deferred until after page load.
Work in Progress
Image Alt Text Remediation — Active
| Started | 30 March 2026 |
| Progress | Updated daily — see below |
| Method | Individual visual review of each image — not template-generated |
| Scope | 23,865 products / 161,587 images across /products/, /collections/, /pages/, /blogs/ |
Existing alt text was written for SEO and does not describe image content. This does not meet WCAG 2.1 AA Success Criterion 1.1.1. We acknowledge this openly and are remediating systematically. All new content published from 30 March 2026 onwards has genuinely descriptive alt text before going live.
Known Limitations
Areas Not Yet Fully Audited
- Checkout and cart flow — Shopify's checkout is WCAG compliant by default. Our custom fields within it have not yet been independently audited.
- Blog articles and editorial pages — existing posts not yet reviewed for heading structure, link text quality, or image alt text.
- Account creation and login pages — not yet audited.
- Search results pages — not yet audited.
- Screen reader device testing — our testing to date has used automated tools. Real-device testing with VoiceOver (Mac/iOS) and NVDA (Windows) has not yet been completed.
Third-Party Components Outside Our Control
- Facebook Pixel (fbevents.js): Uses a deprecated browser API within Meta's codebase. We cannot modify Meta's code. This will be resolved when Meta updates their pixel library.
- Shop Pay: Shopify's own checkout and payment system sets third-party cookies. Outside our control.
