What Each Format Actually Is
Framed canvas: the artwork printed on artist-grade canvas, stretched drum-tight over timber bars, and finished in a floating frame. No glass anywhere. The surface carries a subtle weave texture that reads painterly, closest to an original acrylic or oil at viewing distance.
Framed fine art print: the artwork printed on heavyweight archival cotton-rag paper, hand trimmed, and framed. The paper surface holds the finest tonal detail and the crispest edges, the gallery and editorial look.
Both use the same archival pigment inks and the same solid timber frames, oak, white or black finish, cut and joined on Italian machinery by our own artisans in Australia. The difference is the surface, and everything follows from it.
Canvas behaves like a painting. Paper behaves like a page. Rooms know the difference.
Where Canvas Wins
- Large scale: beyond about 1.2m, glass becomes heavy, reflective and unforgiving; canvas stays light and calm. Our extra large works are predominantly canvas for this reason.
- Bright rooms and window walls: no glass means no reflections, the difference between seeing the artwork and seeing the garden behind you.
- Painterly and textural abstraction: gestural strokes and layered washes gain from the canvas weave; the surface joins the illusion.
- Above sofas and beds: lighter for its size and glass-free, which some prefer over sleeping positions.

Longevity, Care and the Making
Both formats are archival as we make them: pigment inks rated for decades, acid-free stock, sealed backs. Care differs slightly. Canvas dusts with a dry microfibre cloth and dislikes damp rooms less than paper does; prints behind glass shrug off kitchens and bathrooms better. Neither wants direct summer sun, no artwork does. Frequently Asked Questions
Is canvas or framed print better for abstract art?
Neither is better; they win different walls. Canvas wins large scale, bright rooms and painterly work; framed prints win detail, groupings and formal registers. Run the five-question test above, the wall's conditions decide, not fashion.
Does canvas art look cheaper than framed prints?
Bare stretched canvas can read budget; framed canvas does not. The floating timber frame is what separates the gallery look from the dorm look. All our canvas works ship framed in solid timber for exactly this reason.
Which lasts longer, canvas or paper prints?
Made properly, both outlast the decorating cycles around them: archival pigment inks and acid-free stock are rated in decades either way. Environment matters more than format, avoid direct sun and persistent damp and both formats will outlive the sofa several times over.
Can I hang canvas art in a bathroom?
In a well-ventilated bathroom or powder room, yes, though a framed print behind glass tolerates humidity swings better. Steamy, windowless ensuites are the one spot we would steer any artwork away from.
Why is framed canvas often cheaper than a framed print at the same size?
Glass. Large-format glazing costs real money and adds freight weight and risk. The canvas format skips it, which at scale can make the larger-feeling format the more economical one, one reason canvas dominates the oversized category.
Do abstract artworks come in both formats?
Most of our range does, the same artwork, printed to order in either format and any size in range. That is the practical advantage of made-to-order production: the artwork you connected with, in the format your wall's conditions want.
What frame finish should I choose for canvas abstract art?
The same logic as prints: oak finish for warmth and timber-floored rooms, white finish for pale floating works, black finish for definition and formality. Solid timber in all three, made in Australia, keep one finish per wall.
