The Rule That Changes Everything
How High to Hang Wall Art — The Rule That Changes Everything
Hanging art too high is the most common mistake people make. It's so common it has a name: floating art syndrome — where considered pieces hover near the ceiling with no visual connection to the room below. The fix is simple: there's one number that solves almost every hanging challenge, and once you know it, you'll never hang a picture at the wrong height again.
At Olive et Oriel we've been helping people hang their art prints perfectly since 2015. This guide covers the 57-inch rule, how to apply it above furniture, and when to break the rules deliberately.

The 57-Inch Rule: Your New Default
The 57-inch rule means hanging your art so the centre of the piece — not the top, not the bottom, the centre — sits at 57 inches (145cm) from the floor. This is the standard used by galleries and museums worldwide, corresponding to the average human eye level when standing.
In practice: if your canvas is 48cm tall, its centre is at 30cm from the bottom. You want that centre point at 145cm from the floor — so the bottom of your canvas hangs at 115cm, and the top at 175cm. The hook in the wall goes at 145cm (or adjusted for the hanging hardware position).

Adjusting for Furniture: The Above-Sofa Rule
When hanging art above furniture — a sofa, bed, console table, desk — the 57-inch rule takes a back seat to a more important principle: visual connection. Art above furniture should feel anchored to what's below it, not floating above it.
The rule of thumb: leave 15–25cm between the top of the furniture and the bottom of the frame. This creates a visual connection without the art sitting too close (which can feel crowded) or too far above (which creates the floating effect). For a standard sofa back at 95cm height, your frame bottom should sit at approximately 110–120cm.
Framed art prints tend to be easier to position above furniture because you can see the exact frame edge clearly. With canvas prints, remember the canvas itself IS the frame — measure from the edge of the canvas to the furniture top.
Gallery Walls: How High to Hang the Arrangement
For a gallery wall arrangement, position the overall composition — not individual pieces — at the right height. Treat the arrangement as one object: its centre should sit at approximately 145cm from the floor (or 15–25cm above the furniture below it, whichever is lower).
Layout your arrangement on the floor first. Measure the total height of the arrangement. Divide by two to find the centre. That centre goes at 145cm from the floor.

Frequently Asked Questions
How high should you hang wall art?
The standard rule is to hang art so the centre of the piece sits at 145–155cm from the floor (approximately 57–60 inches). This places art at the average eye level for a standing adult and matches how art is hung in professional galleries. The exact height can shift slightly based on ceiling height and furniture.
How high should I hang art above a sofa?
Hang art so the bottom of the frame is 15–25cm above the top of the sofa back. The art shouldn't feel like it's floating above the sofa — that gap should feel intentional and connected.
What is the 57-inch rule for hanging art?
The 57-inch rule (approximately 145cm) means hanging art so its centre sits at 57 inches from the floor. This is the standard used by galleries and museums worldwide and corresponds to the average human eye level. It works for most rooms regardless of ceiling height.
How high should art be above a bed?
Art above a bed should have a 15–25cm gap between the top of the bedhead and the bottom of the frame. This keeps art visually connected to the bed rather than floating. If you have no bedhead, aim for the bottom of the frame at around 90–100cm from the floor.
Should all pictures be hung at the same height?
In a gallery wall, the centres of each piece don't need to be at the same height — but the overall arrangement should sit within a defined horizontal zone. For a row along a hallway, aligning top edges or centres of each frame creates visual rhythm.
