Eco-Friendly Wallpaper: What to Look For (And What to Avoid)

Eco-friendly wallpaper has become one of the most searched wallpaper categories and one of the most misrepresented. The term is applied to everything from wallpaper printed with water-based inks to wallpaper manufactured from recycled materials to wallpaper that carries third-party environmental certifications, and in many cases to wallpaper that is none of these things but uses green language in its marketing. Understanding what makes wallpaper genuinely eco-friendly and what the various claims actually mean allows you to make a purchasing decision based on evidence rather than marketing vocabulary.

The environmental impact of wallpaper falls into three categories: the substrate material, the inks and dyes used in printing, and the adhesive used in installation. A wallpaper that addresses all three is genuinely more environmentally responsible than a wallpaper that addresses only one and markets the single improvement as the whole story. The most common partial claim is water-based inks, which are genuinely lower in volatile organic compounds than solvent-based inks but say nothing about the substrate material or adhesive requirements. Understanding the full picture allows you to ask the right questions of any supplier before committing to a purchase.

Substrate: The Most Important Variable

The substrate is the base material the wallpaper is printed on and is the largest component of any wallpaper environmental footprint. Non-woven substrate is made from a blend of polyester and cellulose fibres bonded without weaving. More durable and dimensionally stable than paper-backed wallpaper, the polyester component is petroleum-derived but the material durability means it lasts longer and produces less waste over time than less durable alternatives. Non-woven is the substrate used for all our paste-the-wall wallpaper. Paper-backed substrate has a biodegradable paper component but is less durable than non-woven and more susceptible to moisture damage, potentially resulting in shorter lifespan and more frequent replacement. PVC vinyl substrate has the highest environmental concern. PVC production involves chlorine chemistry and PVC wallpaper is not biodegradable and creates disposal challenges. All our wallpaper is PVC-free. Natural fibre substrates including grasscloth, jute, and seagrass are woven from natural plant fibres and are biodegradable, but natural fibre wallpapers cannot be cleaned with water and are not suitable for humid environments.

Inks: VOCs and Water-Based Claims

Wallpaper printing inks historically used solvent-based formulations containing volatile organic compounds that off-gas into the room environment after installation. Water-based inks reduce or eliminate VOCs and are now the standard for most reputable wallpaper manufacturers. Our wallpaper is printed with water-based inks throughout. The certification to look for is GREENGUARD Gold, administered by UL Environment, which is the most rigorous third-party certification for indoor air quality. It requires testing for over 10,000 chemical emissions and is particularly important for nurseries and children rooms where the occupants spend extended time in close proximity to the wall surface.

Peel and Stick: The Environmental Case

Peel-and-stick wallpaper has a specific environmental advantage that is frequently overlooked. It removes cleanly without water or chemical strippers, generating no chemical waste in the removal process. Traditional paste-the-wall wallpaper requires significant water and sometimes chemical solvents for removal, and the resulting waste must be disposed of. Peel-and-stick removal is dry and generates only the substrate material itself as waste. For renters who move regularly and redecorate between tenancies, peel-and-stick clean removal also means the wall beneath is not damaged, avoiding the plaster repair and repainting that paste-the-wall removal often necessitates. Less remediation means less material consumption and lower environmental impact across the property lifecycle.

The most durable wallpaper with the longest lifespan is often more environmentally responsible than the most naturally sourced wallpaper that requires frequent replacement. Longevity is an environmental variable that most eco-friendly claims ignore entirely.

What to Look For: A Checklist

• PVC-free substrate: Non-woven, paper, or natural fibre. Avoid PVC vinyl if environmental impact is a priority in your purchasing decision.
• Water-based low-VOC inks: Ask the supplier directly if the inks are water-based and if VOC levels are independently tested or certified.
• GREENGUARD Gold certification: The most rigorous independent certification for indoor air quality. Particularly important for nurseries and children rooms.
• Peel-and-stick for renters: Dry removal, no chemical waste, no wall damage at end of tenancy.

Room by Room

• Living room and bedroom: Non-woven water-based ink wallpaper meets a reasonable eco-friendly standard for primary living spaces. Look for PVC-free and low-VOC as minimum criteria.
• Bathroom: Moisture-resistant substrate is the practical priority. Peel-and-stick performs well in bathrooms with moderate humidity. Avoid natural fibre substrates in bathrooms as they are not moisture-resistant.

The only reliable assessment is the sample held against the actual wall at the actual viewing distance in the actual light conditions of the room at different times of day. This assessment takes approximately five minutes and is the single most reliable investment in the wallpaper buying process.
