Peel and Stick Wallpaper on Textured Walls
The Complete Guide
Textured walls and peel and stick wallpaper — the honest guide
Most homes in the US have textured walls — orange peel, knockdown, skip trowel. And the most common question we hear from American customers is: can you install peel and stick wallpaper on them? The short answer: not directly. The longer answer: yes, with the right preparation — and it's more achievable than most guides suggest.
This page covers everything you need to know: which textures are problematic, how to prepare textured walls for wallpaper, the Roman PRO-977 primer method used by professional wallpaper installers, and why ordering a $4.99 sample first is the smartest move you can make before committing to a full installation.
Why peel and stick wallpaper struggles on textured walls
Peel and stick wallpaper relies on full surface contact between the adhesive and the wall. On a smooth, flat wall the adhesive bonds across 100% of the surface area. On a textured wall, it can only contact the peaks — leaving the valleys unbonded. This creates several problems:
Adhesion failure. With only partial surface contact, the wallpaper has less holding power. It's more likely to lift at edges and seams, especially in humid rooms like bathrooms or during temperature changes.
Visible texture. Thinner wallpapers will telegraph the underlying texture, showing bumps and ridges through the surface. This is particularly noticeable with lighter coloured or solid patterns.
Uneven finish. On heavily textured walls, the wallpaper may pucker or bubble in the valleys where the adhesive can't reach the surface, creating an uneven, unprofessional result.
The good news: most common US wall textures — particularly orange peel — can be addressed with the preparation method below. Removable wallpaper is entirely achievable on textured walls with proper prep.
Texture types — which are manageable
Orange peel — light, common in US homes. Manageable with skim coat + primer. Most customers achieve good results.
Light knockdown / skip trowel — moderate texture. Needs skim coat, sanding, and Roman PRO-977 primer. Achievable with patience.
Heavy knockdown / hand-trowelled — significant peaks and valleys. Requires multiple skim coats and thorough sanding. Labour intensive but doable.
Popcorn — the most challenging. Popcorn texture on walls is rare (usually ceiling). If present, consider removing it entirely before wallpapering. Scrape dampened popcorn, skim coat, sand smooth.
The preparation method — step by step
This is the method used by professional wallpaper installers in the US. It requires more work upfront but delivers results that look and last like a smooth-wall installation.
Step 1 — Skim coat the wall. Apply a thin layer of all-purpose joint compound (available at Home Depot or Lowe's) over the textured surface using a wide drywall knife. Work in sections. The goal is to fill the valleys and bring the surface to a flat plane — not to build up thickness. Allow to dry fully (typically overnight).
Step 2 — Sand smooth. Once dry, sand the skim coat with 120-grit sandpaper on a long-handled sanding block. Work in light circular motions. You're looking for a surface that feels smooth to the touch with no ridges or high spots. Wipe down with a barely damp cloth and allow to dry completely.
Step 3 — Apply Roman PRO-977 Ultra Prime. This is the professional-grade step that most DIY guides skip. Roman PRO-977 is a pigmented acrylic wallcovering primer specifically engineered for wallpaper installation. It does three things: seals the sanded surface so the wallpaper adhesive doesn't soak in; creates a matte finish that gives the peel and stick backing a consistent surface to bond to; and promotes clean strippability when you eventually want to remove the wallpaper.
Apply PRO-977 with a roller at the recommended spread rate (400–450 sq ft per gallon). Do not dilute. Dry to touch in approximately one hour; allow 3 hours minimum — ideally 12 hours — before installing wallpaper. Room temperature must be above 60°F during application. Zero VOC, water clean-up.
Step 4 — Test with a sample before ordering. Even with perfect preparation, always test with a wallpaper sample on the actual prepared surface before committing to a full order. Order a $4.99 sample, apply it to your test area, and assess adhesion after 24–48 hours. If the sample holds cleanly with no lifting at edges, you're ready to order your full installation.
