How Olive et Oriel Prints Your Art — Archival Giclée Quality Explained

How Olive et Oriel Prints Your Art — Archival Giclée Quality Explained

Every art print and wallpaper that leaves Olive et Oriel is produced using archival giclée printing technology — the same process used by leading galleries and museums around the world. Understanding why this matters will help you appreciate the difference between what we produce and what you'll find elsewhere.

We've been refining our production processes at our two facilities since 2015. This is what we've learned, and why we believe giclée printing is the only way to produce art that truly lasts.

What Is Giclée Printing?

Giclée (from the French word for 'to spray') is a fine art digital printing process that uses archival pigment inks — not dye-based inks — sprayed in extremely fine droplets onto premium substrates. The result is a colour accuracy and tonal range that far exceeds what standard commercial printing can achieve.

The critical difference between giclée printing and standard digital printing is the ink type. Pigment-based inks bind to the substrate at a molecular level and are significantly more resistant to UV radiation and humidity than dye-based inks. This is what makes archival printing genuinely archival — rated for longevity measured in decades, not years.

Our Substrates and Quality Controls

The substrate — what you print on — is as important as the ink. At Olive et Oriel, we print on a range of premium fine art papers and canvases, all acid-free and matched to the specific requirements of each artwork.

Our fine art paper prints use heavyweight matte papers (200gsm+) that provide the texture and weight appropriate for museum-quality reproduction. Our canvas prints use a tightly woven, acid-free canvas that accepts ink beautifully and stretches without distortion around our frames.

Every print that leaves our facilities undergoes quality control before dispatch. Our team reviews colour accuracy, print registration, and substrate quality. We don't ship work we wouldn't be proud to hang in our own homes.
